I am deeply disturbed to learn that beagles are being used for research in New Zealand. I am opposed to cruel animal research. As the Minister responsible for animal welfare legislation governing laboratory animals and animal welfare ethics committees we, the undersigned, call on you to undertake the following: 1) Announce an immediate moratorium on all beagle research. 2) Prohibit the use of cats or dogs for the purpose of animal research as I believe these animals should be afforded the same legal protection as that afforded those kept as companion animals. 3) To launch an independent inquiry into the ineffectiveness of Animal Welfare Ethics Committees in preventing duplicate, redundant or superfluous research.
